If your eyes often feel gritty, tired, or uncomfortable, you may be dealing with dry eye syndrome. It can happen when your tears do not provide enough moisture, which leads to irritation that can affect your daily life, from reading a book to driving at night.

At Windsor Eye Care, we offer OptiLight, a light-based treatment designed to help manage dry eye by addressing the inflammation that often contributes to the problem.

A Quick Look at Dry Eye Symptoms and Causes

Dry eye symptoms can range from mild annoyance to significant irritation that impacts your vision and comfort. It’s fairly common for people to ignore symptoms, but our whole team wants you to know that you don’t have to deal with the discomfort alone.

Common Symptoms You May Notice

Keep your eye out for these common symptoms:

  • A stinging or scratchy feeling in your eyes
  • Redness and sensitivity to light
  • Watery eyes, which can be your body’s response to the irritation
  • Blurry vision or tired eyes
  • Difficulty with nighttime driving

Why Your Eyes Feel Dry

Dry eye often comes down to an issue with your tear film, the thin layer of moisture that protects your eye’s surface. This can happen for 2 main reasons: Either your eyes don’t produce enough tears, or the tears you do produce evaporate too quickly.

This evaporation issue is often linked to blocked oil glands lining your eyelids. This condition, known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), is a common contributor to dry eye disease, though many factors, including seasonal allergies, can also contribute to this imbalance.

How OptiLight Works to Relieve Dryness

OptiLight by Lumenis is a light-based procedure that helps manage dry eye. It uses gentle, precise pulses of light to address the inflammation often associated with dry eye disease.

The Role of Light Pulses

OptiLight technology uses specific wavelengths of light to help reduce inflammation around the eyes. It can also support the function of the tiny meibomian glands lining your eyelids.

Target the Contributing Causes

Instead of just temporarily soothing symptoms with drops, this treatment aims to support your eye’s natural tear function. By addressing blockages and inflammation, it helps support the production of a more stable and healthy tear film.

What to Expect During Your OptiLight Session

Knowing what happens during the procedure can help you feel more comfortable and prepared. The process is straightforward and is performed right in the office.

A Simple and Quick Procedure

A typical session is brief. Your eye doctor can place protective shields over your eyes and apply a cool gel to the treatment area. Then, a small device delivers the light pulses to the skin around your eyes.

The Feel of the Treatment

You may feel a warm sensation as the light is applied, but the procedure is designed to be gentle. Most people find the experience quite comfortable.

The Benefits and Results of OptiLight

After completing the number of sessions recommended by your eye doctor, many people notice a clear improvement in their dry eye symptoms. Your specific results depend on your individual situation and the severity of your symptoms.

How Long the Treatment Lasts

For many people, the relief from OptiLight can be long-lasting. To maintain the benefits and to keep symptoms under control, your eye doctor may recommend a maintenance session from time to time.

Potential Side Effects to Know

Side effects are typically mild and temporary. You might experience some redness or warmth in the treated area, but this usually fades shortly after the session is complete.

Is OptiLight a Good Fit for You?

This treatment may be a great option if you struggle with the ongoing irritation of dry eye disease, especially if it’s related to meibomian gland dysfunction. A thorough eye exam is the first step to finding out for sure.

Who Can Benefit from This Treatment

OptiLight is often recommended for individuals with long-term dry eye symptoms that have not improved enough with other methods like eye drops or warm compresses. It is a noninvasive option that addresses a key underlying source of the condition.

Create a Personalized Dry Eye Plan

Your eye care team can work with you to develop a plan tailored to your needs. This plan helps manage your symptoms and support your long-term eye health and comfort.
