What Does IPL Do?

When your eyes feel dry, irritated, or constantly uncomfortable, it’s a problem. This condition, called dry eye disease, can affect every part of your daily comfort. So, what can you do?

If this sounds familiar, intense pulsed light therapy, also known as IPL, might be right for you. IPL is a noninvasive treatment that uses light pulses to target and treat the underlying causes of dry eye disease. IPL goes beyond temporary solutions to improve tear quality and boost your long-term eye health.

What Is IPL Therapy?

IPL therapy started in the 1990s as a dermatological solution. Nowadays, it’s also used to help people struggling with eye-related issues like dry eye disease.

IPL works by delivering gentle pulses of light at different wavelengths. These waves penetrate different levels of skin tissue in the eyelids to open the glands responsible for healthier tears. Meanwhile, other wavelengths reduce inflammation on the eye’s surface.

Think of IPL as a modern way to support healthy tear production—all while reducing dry eye discomfort. It’s a safe and noninvasive approach to dry eye disease, making it a popular option.

How IPL Helps With Dry Eye

Dry eye disease happens when your eyes can’t produce the right amount or quality of tears to keep them moist. This often leads to symptoms like:

  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Blurriness
  • Light sensitivity

Sometimes these symptoms can be temporarily treated with eye drops and other at-home methods. However, these treatments can’t address the root cause of the imbalance in your tears.

That’s where IPL therapy shines. This treatment focuses on improving the meibomian glands, which produce the oils crucial to healthy, lubricating tears. Without this oil layer, tears evaporate too quickly, leaving your eyes feeling dry and uncomfortable.

By applying controlled light pulses, IPL unclogs the meibomian glands and encourages the production of better quality tears. The result is less inflammation, healthier tears, and reduced dry eye symptoms.

What to Expect From an IPL Treatment Session

If you’re curious about IPL therapy, understanding the process makes it easier. The procedure is safe and comfortable—and it all starts with a thorough evaluation.

Initial Evaluation

Before receiving IPL treatment, your eye doctor will perform a comprehensive eye exam. They’ll review your eye health history, check your tear film, and use this information to find out if IPL is right for you.

Not everyone is a candidate, so this assessment is important. If you’re a good fit for IPL, your optometrist will explain the next steps.

Preparing for the Procedure

During your appointment, the skin around your eyes is carefully cleaned. Then, a cooling gel is applied to protect it during treatment. You’ll also wear protective goggles to shield your eyes from the light pulses.

Once you’re ready, you’ll move on to the next step.

IPL Process

Using a handheld device, your doctor will apply precisely timed light pulses to the areas surrounding your eyes. You might feel a light warming or tingling sensation, but the procedure is generally well-tolerated.

Your optometrist may express the meibomian glands manually to release oils and improve tear quality. This involves gently pressing on the walls of the glands to remove any blockages.

The Benefits of IPL Therapy

IPL therapy doesn’t just offer temporary symptom relief—it also addresses the root cause of dry eye disease to prevent symptoms from returning. Some of the benefits include:

  • Reduced inflammation around the eye area
  • Improved the function of meibomian glands
  • Minimized need for artificial tears
  • Long-lasting relief from symptoms
  • Enhanced overall eye health

Most patients undergo 3-4 sessions spaced over a few weeks for lasting relief. While results may vary, many patients notice improvements as early as their first session.

Additional Uses for IPL Therapy

IPL has transformed dry eye treatment. However, the benefits don’t stop there. IPL also works well for treating cosmetic skin concerns.

Many people use IPL for common issues like:

  • Reducing redness and rosacea
  • Minimizing sun damage and age spots
  • Improving skin texture and tone
  • Treating acne and acne scars

It’s an effective and safe option with plenty of uses!
