We Help Your Kids by Managing Myopia
Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a condition that causes blurry vision at a distance, while close-up vision often remains clear. As children grow, their eyes grow too! But the growth can come with unwanted elongation of the eye, which is what makes objects far away appear blurry. While teeth can be shifted with braces to correct misalignment, myopia cannot be reversed. However, innovative myopia management technology can help slow and stall its progression.
Myopia can be managed with therapeutic contact lenses that can slow the growth of the eye or reshape the cornea. We offer both Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT) and FDA-approved MiSight contact lenses to treat the progression of myopia.
The first step is to bring your child in for an eye exam. Detecting the condition as early as possible is crucial. Book an appointment with us to learn more about the myopia control methods we offer and which options are right for your child.
Book AppointmentWhy Is Myopia Control Important?
When left unaddressed, myopia can get worse. Eventually, it can develop into high myopia.
People with high myopia have a longer eye shape, which can thin out the retina and other eye tissues. Because of that, high myopia can lead to an increased risk of retinal detachment. High myopia can also increase a person’s risk of developing cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Signs & Symptoms of Myopia
Some common signs and symptoms of myopia in its early stages include:
- Faraway objects appearing blurred or fuzzy
- Headaches
- Eye strain, especially when trying to look far away
If you think your child may have myopia, keep an eye out for the following warning signs:
- Constant squinting
- Poor academic performance
- Short attention span
- Needing to hold objects close to their face
- Sitting too close to screens
Vision & Learning with Myopia
If your child has myopia, they may experience learning difficulties that negatively impact their performance in school. For example, their nearsighted vision could make it challenging for them to see the board in the classroom.
Sometimes, these vision challenges can lead to classroom behaviors that may seem like signs of other conditions, such as ADHD. Getting routine eye exams and a clearer understanding of your child’s vision can help address and prevent vision-related learning challenges.
Fitting MiSight & CRT Lenses
MiSight and CRT contact lenses must be fitted to your child’s eyes. This fitting process helps support your child’s eye health, vision, and comfort.
At our practice, corneal topography is a critical part of this process. It provides a detailed map of the cornea, which helps us provide a more accurate fitting. This technology is also helpful for monitoring the progression of myopia and the growth of your child’s eyes.
MiSight for Myopia Control
MiSight contact lenses are 1 option we offer for myopia control. These soft contact lenses are FDA-approved and proven to help slow the progression of myopia in children from ages 8–12. MiSight contact lenses can help your child see clearly and help slow myopia progression at the same time.
CRT for Myopia Control
Corneal Reshaping Therapy (CRT) involves a type of specialty lens worn at night. CRT changes the way light is focused in your eye by gently flattening the cornea to help light focus correctly at the back of the retina. In doing so, these hard contact lenses can help kids see clearly during the day without contacts or glasses while also helping slow myopia progression.
