Book AppointmentHow Tears Impact Your Eye Health
Your tear film, a thin layer of liquid on the eyes’ surface, plays an important role in your eye health.
It’s made up of 3 different layers: the innermost mucus layer, the middle water layer, and outer oil layer.
All of these layers are important for maintaining an adequate level of moisture in your eyes. Dry eye often occurs when there is an imbalance in one or all of the tears layers. The two most common issues are lack of oil, which allows your tears to evaporate too quickly, or insufficient water layer, which leads to dryness.
Common Dry Eye Culprit: Meibomian Gland Dysfunction
What are meibomian glands? They are small glands embedded in our eyelids which secrete oils that coat the surface of our eyes. The oil helps prevent the water layer of our tears from evaporating too quickly, keeping our eyes and vision clear and comfortable.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a common cause of dry eye disease. It occurs when the meibomian glands are not producing an adequate quantity or quality of oils. The oils become thicker and often block or clog the gland openings.
When left untreated, MGD can lead to severe dry eyes and blurry vision. Fortunately, there are many ways to diagnose and treat the condition, including intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.
Dry Eye Diagnostics & Assessments
Dry eye can be detected through a comprehensive eye exam. During your visit, we’ll consider your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle as part of our full assessment of your eye health.
We’ll also take a look at the surface of your eye and your tear film to determine the severity of your dry eye symptoms.
After we’ve performed a thorough assessment, we can create a robust treatment plan to help you experience long-lasting relief.
